Lake Manyara
From the moment you pass through the entrance gate, you are enveloped by a verdant, jungle-like groundwater forest. Here, troops of baboons, numbering in the hundreds, lounge casually by the roadside. Blue monkeys nimbly navigate the ancient mahogany trees, while dainty bushbucks tread cautiously in the shadows, and oversized forest hornbills create a cacophony in the high canopy.
Beyond the forest’s intimate embrace, you’ll find a grassy floodplain offering expansive views eastward. Your gaze will stretch across an alkaline lake to the jagged blue volcanic peaks rising from the endless Maasai Steppes. This is where large herds of buffalo, wildebeest, and zebra gather, joined by giraffes whose coloration is so dark they appear black from afar.
Venture inland from the floodplain and you’ll discover a narrow belt of acacia woodland. This is the favored domain of Manyara’s legendary tree-climbing lions and impressively tusked elephants. Watch as squadrons of banded mongoose dart between the acacias, while the diminutive Kirk’s dik-dik forages in their shade. Look up to see pairs of klipspringer silhouetted on rocks above a field of searing hot springs that steam and bubble near the lakeshore in the park’s far south.
Manyara is an ideal introduction to Tanzania’s birdlife with more than 400 species recorded. Even first-time visitors to Africa could reasonably expect to observe 100 of these in a single day. Highlights include thousands of pink-hued flamingos on their endless migration, as well as other large waterbirds such as pelicans, cormorants, and storks.
