The Lemosho Route is widely regarded as the most beautiful and remote route on Mount Kilimanjaro. Starting from the western side of the mountain, it traverses through untouched rainforest, vast moorlands, and dramatic alpine desert landscapes before reaching Uhuru Peak. Its longer duration and excellent acclimatization make it one of the highest success-rate routes on Kilimanjaro.
This 8-day itinerary includes a full crossing of the stunning Shira Plateau and a dedicated acclimatization day, giving your body optimal time to adapt to the altitude. The route joins the Machame trail near Lava Tower but offers a more gradual ascent with fewer crowds and more diverse scenery.
Why choose the Lemosho Route? It offers the perfect balance of challenge, solitude, and breathtaking scenery. With private toilet facilities included, spacious campsites, and remote wilderness, it is the preferred choice for climbers seeking a premium Kilimanjaro experience.

Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins with a drive to Londorossi Gate (2,100m) on the western side of the mountain. After registration formalities, you start your trek through pristine montane rainforest. The trail is peaceful and less crowded than other routes, winding through ancient trees draped in moss. You'll arrive at Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,780m) — meaning "Big Tree" in Swahili — by early afternoon, where your tents await beneath the forest canopy.
After breakfast, you leave the rainforest behind and ascend into the heath and moorland zone. The trail opens up dramatically as you emerge onto the Shira Plateau — a vast high-altitude plain formed by an ancient volcanic caldera. On clear days, the views of Kibo Peak and Mount Meru are simply breathtaking. Shira 1 Camp (3,610m) offers a stunning setting with panoramic views as the sun sets over the African savannah.
A shorter hiking day designed for acclimatization as you traverse the stunning Shira Plateau. The terrain is gentle and scenic, with giant lobelias and groundsel dotting the landscape. You'll take an optional afternoon acclimatization hike to a nearby ridge for even better views. Shira 2 Camp (3,850m) is your home for the night, with incredible views of Kibo's glaciers glowing in the golden afternoon light.
This is the key acclimatization day on the Lemosho Route. You ascend towards Lava Tower (4,640m) — a dramatic volcanic rock formation — where you'll stop for lunch at high altitude. The landscape transitions to alpine desert, stark and beautiful. After lunch, you descend to Barranco Camp (3,960m), nestled beneath the Great Barranco Wall. This "climb high, sleep low" strategy is crucial for successful acclimatization.
Today begins with the thrilling Barranco Wall scramble — a steep but non-technical climb that is one of the highlights of the entire trek. Your guides will assist you at every step. From the top, you're rewarded with spectacular views of the glaciers above and the valley below. The trail then winds through the Karanga Valley, crossing streams and traversing ridges before arriving at Karanga Camp (4,035m), perched on a rocky hillside with sweeping views.
A shorter hiking day to conserve energy for the summit push. You ascend through the stark alpine desert zone where only the hardiest lichens survive. Barafu Camp (4,673m) — meaning "ice" in Swahili — is perched on a rocky ridge with dramatic views of the summit cone. Your guide will brief you on the summit attempt during the afternoon. After an early dinner, you rest and prepare for the midnight wake-up call.
The most challenging and rewarding day of your life! You'll be woken at midnight for a light snack and hot drink before beginning the summit push by headlamp. The trail ascends steeply through scree, switchback after switchback, towards Stella Point (5,756m) on the crater rim. You'll arrive just before sunrise — a breathtaking moment as the sky turns gold over Africa. From Stella Point, it's a 45-minute trek along the crater edge to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — the highest point on the continent! After celebration and photos, you descend to Mweka Camp (3,100m) for a well-earned rest.
After a celebratory breakfast, you continue your descent through the lush rainforest zone. The trail is steep in places but the thick vegetation, bird calls, and fresh mountain air make for a pleasant walk. You'll arrive at Mweka Gate (1,650m) by mid-morning, where you'll receive your well-earned summit certificates from Kilimanjaro National Park. A vehicle will be waiting to transfer you back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha for a hot shower and celebration dinner.
Comfortable lodges and camps for your stay
Nestled in the lush rainforest beneath ancient trees, Mti Mkubwa ("Big Tree") offers a serene start to your trek. The camp features spacious dome tents, a communal dining tent, and the sounds of the forest as your backdrop.
Two camps on the spectacular Shira Plateau offer breathtaking panoramic views of Kibo Peak and Mount Meru. The camps are spacious and less crowded, with incredible sunset and sunrise views over the African plains.
Dramatically situated at the base of the Great Barranco Wall, surrounded by giant groundsel plants. Despite the high altitude, the sheltered valley location makes for a comfortable night. Wake up to the sight of glaciers hanging above you.
