7-Day Machame Route

Kilimanjaro Package

Machame Route

The Machame Route is widely regarded as the most beautiful route on Mount Kilimanjaro, earning the nickname "Whiskey Route" for being more challenging than Marangu. It approaches from the southwest, traversing through lush rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and glacial zones — offering breathtaking views at every turn.

This 7-day itinerary is carefully designed with optimal acclimatization using the "climb high, sleep low" strategy — including a trek to Lava Tower (4,640m) before sleeping at a lower altitude. Unlike Marangu, the Machame Route follows a different path for descent, giving you a complete circuit experience with diverse landscapes.

Why choose the Machame Route? It offers spectacular scenery, higher summit success rates due to better acclimatization, and a true wilderness camping experience. It is the most popular route for good reason — stunning views and a real sense of adventure.

01
Day

Machame Gate to Machame Camp

1,800m → 3,010m
5-7 hours hiking

Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins at the Machame Gate (1,800m). After registration formalities, you start your trek through dense montane rainforest. The trail is steep in sections, winding through a lush canopy of moss-draped trees, ferns, and wildflowers. Keep an eye out for colobus monkeys and colorful bird species. You'll arrive at Machame Camp (3,010m) by late afternoon, where your tents will be set up and a hot meal awaits.

02
Day

Machame Camp to Shira Camp

3,010m → 3,850m
4-6 hours hiking

After breakfast, you leave the rainforest behind and ascend into the heath and moorland zone. The trail opens up to rolling hills dotted with giant heather, lobelias, and groundsel. On clear days, you'll be rewarded with your first spectacular views of Kibo Peak and Mount Meru in the distance. Shira Camp (3,850m) sits on the edge of the ancient Shira Plateau, offering incredible sunset views over the African plains.

03
Day

Shira Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower

3,850m → 4,640m → 3,960m
6-8 hours hiking

This is a critical acclimatization day using the "climb high, sleep low" strategy. You ascend to Lava Tower (4,640m) — a dramatic volcanic rock formation — for lunch, reaching the highest altitude so far. The landscape transforms into alpine desert, barren and otherworldly. After lunch, you descend to Barranco Camp (3,960m), nestled in a valley beneath the iconic Barranco Wall. This descent helps your body adapt while treating you to spectacular views of Kibo's glaciers.

04
Day

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

3,960m → 4,035m
4-5 hours hiking

Today begins with the famous Barranco Wall — a steep but non-technical scramble that is one of the most exhilarating sections of the entire trek. Your guides will help you navigate the rocky face safely. From the top, you're rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and valleys. The trail then undulates through the Karanga Valley, crossing streams and traversing ridges before arriving at Karanga Camp (4,035m) — your base for the night.

05
Day

Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

4,035m → 4,673m
4-5 hours hiking

A shorter hiking day to conserve energy for the summit push. You ascend through the alpine desert landscape, with sparse vegetation and views of the massive glaciers on Kibo. Barafu Camp (4,673m) — meaning "ice" in Swahili — is perched on a rocky ridge. Your guide will brief you on the summit attempt. After an early dinner, you rest and prepare for a midnight wake-up call. The excitement is building!

06
Day

Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak — Summit Day!

4,673m → 5,895m → 3,100m
12-16 hours hiking

The most challenging and rewarding day of your life! You'll be woken at midnight for a light snack and hot drink before beginning the summit push by headlamp. The trail ascends steeply through scree, switchback after switchback, towards Stella Point (5,756m) on the crater rim. You'll arrive just before sunrise — a magical moment as the sky turns gold over Africa. From Stella Point, it's a 45-minute trek along the crater edge to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — the highest point on the continent! After celebration and photos, you descend all the way to Mweka Camp (3,100m) for a well-earned rest.

07
Day

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate — Descent

3,100m → 1,650m
3-4 hours hiking

After a celebratory breakfast, you continue your descent through the lush rainforest zone. The trail is steep in places but the thick vegetation, bird calls, and fresh mountain air make for a pleasant walk. You'll arrive at Mweka Gate (1,650m) by mid-morning, where you'll receive your well-earned summit certificates from Kilimanjaro National Park. A vehicle will be waiting to transfer you back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha for a hot shower and celebration dinner.
