5-Day Marangu Route

Kilimanjaro Package

Marangu Route

The Marangu Route is the most popular and longest-established route on Mount Kilimanjaro, affectionately known as the "Coca-Cola Route." It is the only route that offers hut accommodation throughout the entire trek, making it an excellent choice for climbers who prefer not to camp in tents.

This 5-day itinerary is a faster-paced option for experienced hikers and those with limited time. While it does not include the extra acclimatization day, the route's gradual slopes and hut accommodations still offer a comfortable and rewarding climb. For optimal summit success, we recommend the 6-day version.

Why choose the 5-Day Marangu Route? It is the shortest option on the easiest route, ideal for experienced trekkers with good fitness who want to summit Kilimanjaro in just 5 days. Hut accommodation means no camping gear needed.

01
Day

Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

1,860m → 2,700m
4-5 hours hiking

Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins at the Marangu Gate (1,860m). After registration formalities with the Kilimanjaro National Park Authority, you start your trek through dense montane rainforest. The trail is well-maintained and offers excellent birdwatching opportunities, including the vibrant colobus monkeys. You'll arrive at Mandara Hut (2,700m) by early afternoon, where a hot meal and comfortable hut accommodation await.

02
Day

Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

2,700m → 3,720m
6-7 hours hiking

After breakfast, you leave the rainforest behind and enter the heath and moorland zone. The trail passes the Maundi Crater, offering spectacular views of the surrounding landscape and, on clear days, the summit of Mawenzi Peak. Vegetation transitions to giant heather and lobelias. Horombo Hut (3,720m) is a large and comfortable hut complex where you'll spend the night before the push to Kibo.

03
Day

Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

3,720m → 4,700m
6-7 hours hiking

The trail ascends through the alpine desert zone, a stark and otherworldly landscape. You'll cross the "Saddle" between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks — a vast, barren expanse that feels like another planet. Vegetation becomes scarce as you approach Kibo Hut (4,700m), situated at the base of the iconic Kibo cone. An early dinner is served around 5 PM, followed by an early bedtime. You'll be woken at midnight for the summit attempt.

04
Day

Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak — Summit Day!

4,700m → 5,895m → 3,720m
12-15 hours hiking

The most challenging and rewarding day of your life! You'll be woken at midnight for a light snack before beginning the summit push by headlamp. The trail ascends steep switchbacks through scree and snow to Gilman's Point (5,681m) on the crater rim, arriving just before sunrise. From here, you trek along the crater edge to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — the highest point in Africa! After celebrating at the summit, you descend back to Kibo Hut for a short rest, then continue down to Horombo Hut for the night.

05
Day

Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate — Descent

3,720m → 1,860m
5-6 hours hiking

After a well-deserved breakfast reflecting on your incredible achievement, you continue your descent through the moorland and rainforest zones. The trail winds downhill past Mandara Hut, offering a different perspective of the lush vegetation. You'll arrive at Marangu Gate by early afternoon, where you'll receive your well-earned summit certificates. A vehicle will be waiting to transfer you back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha for a hot shower and celebration dinner.

5-Day Marangu Route — Frequently Asked Questions

Is the 5-Day Marangu Route suitable for beginners?
The 5-Day Marangu Route is best suited for experienced hikers with good fitness and some high-altitude experience. The faster pace without an acclimatization day makes it more challenging. Beginners are strongly recommended to choose the 6-day version for higher summit success.
Do I need camping gear for the Marangu Route?
No. The Marangu Route is the only route that provides hut accommodation throughout. You sleep in dormitory-style huts with mattresses and pillows. You will need a sleeping bag, but no tent is required.
What is the summit success rate for the 5-Day Marangu Route?
The summit success rate for the 5-day version is approximately 60-70% for well-prepared climbers. The 6-day version offers higher rates (75-85%) due to the extra acclimatization day. We recommend the 6-day version for first-time climbers.
What fitness level is required?
A good level of fitness is essential. The 5-day itinerary moves faster with less time for recovery. We recommend regular cardiovascular exercise (hiking, running, cycling) for at least 3 months prior to your climb.
What is the best time of year to climb the Marangu Route?
The best times are January-March and June-October. These months offer the most stable weather conditions. The short rainy season (November-December) and long rainy season (April-May) are less ideal but still possible.
How many guides and porters will be on my team?
For safety and comfort, we provide one guide per 2-3 climbers, plus dedicated porters to carry equipment and supplies. A typical group of 4 climbers includes 2 guides and 6-8 porters.
Is altitude sickness a concern on the 5-Day Marangu Route?
Altitude sickness can affect anyone regardless of age or fitness. The 5-day itinerary has a faster ascent profile with no dedicated acclimatization day, so the risk is higher. Our guides are trained to recognize symptoms and will follow strict safety protocols.
What meals are provided on the mountain?
We provide three nutritious meals daily (breakfast, lunch, dinner) plus snacks. Meals include porridge, eggs, fresh fruits, soups, pasta, rice, vegetables, and hot drinks. Dietary requirements can be accommodated with advance notice.
