The Marangu Route is the most popular and longest-established route on Mount Kilimanjaro, affectionately known as the "Coca-Cola Route." It is the only route that offers hut accommodation throughout the entire trek, making it an excellent choice for climbers who prefer not to camp in tents.
This 6-day itinerary includes an extra acclimatization day at Horombo Hut, significantly improving your chances of reaching the summit. The route approaches Kilimanjaro from the southeast and follows the same path for both ascent and descent.
Why choose the Marangu Route? It is considered the easiest route on Kilimanjaro due to its gradual slopes and hut accommodations. No technical climbing experience is required — just a good fitness level and a sense of adventure.

Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins at the Marangu Gate (1,860m). After registration formalities with the Kilimanjaro National Park Authority, you start your trek through dense montane rainforest. The trail is well-maintained and offers excellent birdwatching opportunities, including the vibrant colobus monkeys. You'll arrive at Mandara Hut (2,700m) by early afternoon, where a hot meal and comfortable hut accommodation await.
After breakfast, you leave the rainforest behind and enter the heath and moorland zone. The trail passes the Maundi Crater, offering spectacular views of the surrounding landscape and, on clear days, the summit of Mawenzi Peak. Vegetation transitions to giant heather and lobelias. Horombo Hut (3,720m) is a large and comfortable hut complex where you'll spend the next two nights.
This dedicated acclimatization day is crucial for summit success. After a relaxed breakfast, you'll take a guided day hike to Zebra Rocks (approximately 4,150m) and back. This "climb high, sleep low" strategy helps your body adapt to the altitude. The short hike offers superb views of Kibo Peak and the vast plains below. You return to Horombo Hut for lunch, with the afternoon free for rest, card games, and enjoying the mountain atmosphere.
The trail ascends through the alpine desert zone, a stark and otherworldly landscape. You'll cross the "Saddle" between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks — a vast, barren expanse that feels like another planet. Vegetation becomes scarce as you approach Kibo Hut (4,700m), situated at the base of the iconic Kibo cone. An early dinner is served around 5 PM, followed by an early bedtime. You'll be woken at midnight for the summit attempt.
The most challenging and rewarding day of your life! You'll be woken at midnight for a light snack before beginning the summit push by headlamp. The trail ascends steep switchbacks through scree and snow to Gilman's Point (5,681m) on the crater rim, arriving just before sunrise. From here, you trek along the crater edge to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — the highest point in Africa! After celebrating at the summit, you descend back to Kibo Hut for a short rest, then continue down to Horombo Hut for the night.
After a well-deserved breakfast, you continue your descent through the moorland and rainforest zones. The trail winds downhill past Mandara Hut, offering a different perspective of the lush vegetation you climbed through on Day 1. You'll arrive at Marangu Gate by early afternoon, where you'll receive your well-earned summit certificates. A vehicle will be waiting to transfer you back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha for a hot shower and celebration dinner.
