Kilimanjaro Package

Mawenzi Peak & Uhuru Summit

This exclusive 7-day expedition is designed for ambitious climbers who want more than just Uhuru Peak. The Marangu Route serves as your path to summit both Mawenzi Peak (5,149m / 16,893ft) — the second-highest and most rugged volcanic cone on Kilimanjaro — and Uhuru Peak (5,895m / 19,341ft), the highest point in Africa.

Mawenzi Peak is a striking, jagged volcanic spire that offers a unique climbing challenge with its dramatic rock formations and breathtaking panoramic views. This itinerary includes a dedicated acclimatization day that takes you to the base of Mawenzi, combining altitude adjustment with an incredible side adventure.

Why choose this tour? This is the ultimate Kilimanjaro experience for climbers seeking a dual-peak achievement, exceptional scenery, and the comfort of hut accommodation throughout. No technical climbing is required for the Mawenzi ridge hike, but a good fitness level is essential.

Arrival — Kilimanjaro Airport to Moshi

Kilimanjaro Airport → Moshi
45 min transfer

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be warmly greeted by our representative and transferred to your hotel in Moshi. Located on the lush lower slopes of Kilimanjaro, Moshi is your gateway to adventure. In the evening, you'll meet your lead guide for a detailed briefing about the expedition ahead. Your gear will be checked to ensure you have everything needed for the dual-peak climb.

02
Day

Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

1,860m → 2,700m
4-5 hours hiking

Your expedition begins at Marangu Gate (1,860m). After completing registration formalities, you enter the lush montane rainforest. The well-maintained trail winds through dense vegetation filled with birdlife and colobus monkeys. The sound of the forest and the cool mountain air make for a magical start. You arrive at Mandara Hut (2,700m) by early afternoon for a hot meal and comfortable overnight in the A-frame huts.

03
Day

Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

2,700m → 3,720m
6-7 hours hiking

After breakfast, the trail climbs out of the rainforest into the heath and moorland zone. The landscape transforms dramatically to open grasslands dotted with giant heather, lobelias, and groundsels. You'll pass Maundi Crater with breathtaking views of the surrounding plains. On clear days, the jagged silhouette of Mawenzi Peak comes into view. Horombo Hut (3,720m) is a large, comfortable hut complex where you'll spend two nights — including the Mawenzi acclimatization day.

04
Day

Horombo Hut — Mawenzi Peak Acclimatization Day

3,720m → 4,600m → 3,720m
5-6 hours hiking

This is the highlight acclimatization day — a guided hike to the magnificent Mawenzi Ridge. You'll ascend towards the jagged spires of Mawenzi Peak (5,149m), Kilimanjaro's second-highest volcanic cone, reaching approximately 4,600m. The barren alpine landscape offers incredible views of the Mawenzi massif, the vast Saddle below, and Kibo Peak in the distance. This "climb high, sleep low" strategy is ideal preparation for the summit push. You return to Horombo Hut by early afternoon for a well-deserved rest.

05
Day

Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

3,720m → 4,700m
6-7 hours hiking

The trail ascends through the stark alpine desert zone, crossing the famous Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. This vast, lunar-like expanse is one of the most surreal landscapes on the mountain. Vegetation disappears entirely as you make your way to Kibo Hut (4,700m), perched at the base of the Kibo cone. After an early dinner, you'll prepare for midnight summit bid. Rest is essential — tomorrow will be the most challenging and rewarding day of your life.

06
Day

Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak — Summit Day!

4,700m → 5,895m → 3,720m
12-15 hours hiking

The moment you've been training for! You'll be woken at midnight for tea and snacks before beginning the summit climb by headlamp. The steep switchbacks through scree and snow lead to Gilman's Point (5,681m) on the crater rim — arriving just in time for sunrise. From there, you trek along the crater's edge to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. After photos and celebration, you descend to Kibo Hut for a brief rest, then continue down to Horombo Hut for a well-earned night's sleep.

07
Day

Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate — Descent

3,720m → 1,860m
5-6 hours hiking

After a celebratory breakfast at Horombo Hut, you begin the final descent through moorland and rainforest. The trail winds past Mandara Hut, offering a fresh perspective on the lush vegetation you climbed through on Day 2. You'll arrive at Marangu Gate in the early afternoon, where you receive your summit certificates — one for each peak conquered. A vehicle will transfer you back to Moshi for a hot shower, celebration dinner, and the achievement of a lifetime.

7-Day Mawenzi Peak & Uhuru Summit — Frequently Asked Questions

Do I actually summit Mawenzi Peak on this tour?
This tour includes a guided acclimatization hike to the Mawenzi Ridge at approximately 4,600m, reaching the base of the Mawenzi massif. The full technical summit of Mawenzi Peak (5,149m) requires advanced mountaineering skills and equipment. Our hike offers spectacular close-up views and an incredible high-altitude experience without the need for technical climbing.
Is this tour harder than the standard Marangu Route?
Yes — the Mawenzi acclimatization day involves a longer, higher hike than the standard Zebra Rocks acclimatization on the regular Marangu route. However, the extra altitude exposure actually improves your preparation for Uhuru Peak, potentially increasing summit success.
Do I need special equipment for the Mawenzi hike?
No special climbing equipment is needed. The same hiking gear used for the Marangu Route is suitable — sturdy hiking boots, warm layers, rain gear, and a daypack. Our guides will carry safety equipment including first aid and oxygen.
What is the summit success rate for this expedition?
The 7-day itinerary with the Mawenzi acclimatization hike offers an excellent summit success rate of approximately 80-85% for Uhuru Peak. The extra high-altitude exposure before summit night significantly improves acclimatization.
What fitness level is required?
A high level of fitness is required due to the longer acclimatization hikes and two high-altitude days above 4,600m. We recommend at least 3-4 months of regular cardiovascular training including hiking with elevation gain. Previous high-altitude trekking experience is beneficial.
What is the best time of year to book this tour?
The best times are January-March and June-October. These dry season months offer the clearest skies for both the Mawenzi views and the summit attempt. The Mawenzi massif is particularly spectacular in the early morning golden light.
Is altitude sickness a concern on this route?
Altitude sickness can affect anyone regardless of age or fitness. Our carefully planned 7-day itinerary with the Mawenzi acclimatization day helps minimize the risk. Our guides are trained to recognize symptoms and will monitor your health throughout, with oxygen available.
What meals are provided on the mountain?
We provide three nutritious meals daily (breakfast, lunch, dinner) plus snacks and hot drinks. Meals include porridge, eggs, fresh fruits, soups, pasta, rice, vegetables, and hot beverages. Dietary requirements can be accommodated with advance notice.
