6-Day Serengeti Calving Season Safari — Frequently Asked Questions

When does the calving season happen?
The calving season occurs from late December to March each year, peaking in January and February. During this period, hundreds of thousands of wildebeest gather on the Ndutu Plains in Southern Serengeti to give birth. This is a seasonal safari — availability is limited to these months, and we recommend booking well in advance.
What makes the Ndutu calving season special?
The Ndutu Plains offer the unique spectacle of thousands of newborn wildebeest, zebras, and antelopes taking their first steps within hours of birth. This abundance of vulnerable young attracts every predator in the ecosystem — lions, cheetahs, leopards, hyenas, and jackals. The short grass plains also provide exceptional visibility for photography, unlike the tall grass in other seasons.
What wildlife will I see on this safari?
Beyond the calving wildebeest and zebras, you'll see lions, cheetahs, leopards, hyenas, jackals, and other predators in action. Tarangire offers massive elephant herds and over 500 bird species. The Ngorongoro Crater provides exceptional chances to see black rhinos, hippos, flamingos, and the full Big Five in a single morning.
What is the weather like during calving season?
December to March is the short rains / green season in Tanzania. Expect warm days (28-30°C / 82-86°F) with occasional afternoon showers that bring lush green landscapes and dramatic skies. Early mornings can be cool (15-18°C / 59-64°F). The green vegetation and clear light make this a favourite time for photographers.
Is this the same as the Great Migration?
Yes, the calving season is part of the Great Migration cycle. The herds migrate clockwise through the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem year-round. From December to March, they are concentrated in the Ndutu area of Southern Serengeti / Northern Ngorongoro Conservation Area for calving. From April onwards, they begin moving north toward the Western Corridor and eventually the Maasai Mara.
What should I pack for this safari?
Pack light: neutral-coloured clothing (khaki, beige, olive), comfortable walking shoes, a rain jacket for occasional showers, warm layer for early morning drives, wide-brim hat, sunglasses, sunscreen SPF 50+, insect repellent, camera with 200-400mm zoom lens (essential for calving photography), binoculars, and any personal medication.
Is travel insurance required?
Travel insurance is strongly recommended and should cover medical evacuation, trip cancellation, lost luggage, and personal liability. Your guide carries a first aid kit and communication equipment, but comprehensive insurance provides essential peace of mind for your international travel.
Can I combine this safari with other destinations?
Absolutely! This safari can be combined with a Zanzibar beach extension, Materuni Waterfall and Coffee Tour, or Chemka Hot Springs day trip. We can also arrange a hot air balloon safari over the Serengeti (approximately $550 per person) for a breathtaking aerial perspective of the herds. Please let us know at the time of inquiry.
